Snow and Ice Traction

For nearly 40 years, Smithers has been a leader in the development of new winter traction test methodologies and snow tire testing. We built our first traction truck in 1980 and helped write both the SAE J1466 test standard and its successor, ASTM F1805. To better quantify winter traction test surfaces, Smithers’ engineers developed the CTI penetrometer, which is referenced in both of the test standards.

In 2001, Smithers developed and patented an apparatus to measure tire force and moment properties on snow and ice. Studies conducted using this apparatus resulted in the publication of SAE paper 2000-01-3431, Truck Force and Moment in Cornering – Braking – Driving on Ice, Snow and Dry Surfaces.

    F1805 Snow Tire Traction

The Smithers passenger traction truck is ISO 17025 accredited for ASTM F1805 traction testing. The truck is used to test tires for the RMA 3PMSF (Rubber Manufacturers Association 3 peak mountain snow flake) symbol for tires intended for severe snow use.

Stopping Distance Test on Snow and Ice

The Smithers Winter Test Center (SWTC) offers a wide range of winter test surfaces for evaluating a variety of tires on snow and ice. Surfaces can be groomed to meet specific standards or to meet company specific benchmarking.

    Packed Snow Handling

We have numerous packed snow handling courses for tire evaluations. Snow tire testing can be conducted by our personnel or clients can rent surfaces and perform their own testing.

    Winter Track Rental

All surfaces are available for rental and specific surfaces can be prepared for individual clients needs.

Contact us to discuss your current needs for snow tire testing, or to develop a test program for your specific requirements.
