Akron Laboratory expands testing capabilities for weathering exposure and flammability

The installation of a Xenon Arc test chamber and plans to add additional flammability chambers in 2016 will further broaden the spectrum of environmental test capabilities for the Akron lab.

Akron Laboratory - Smithers RapraThe Xenon Arc test chamber expands Smithers’ capabilities in the area of weathering by analyzing property changes in materials when exposed to elements such as sunlight, rain and moisture. Product manufacturers utilize Xenon Arc testing to understand how their product reacts to these types of weather conditions and characterize the life expectancy of their products.

This state-of-the-art equipment allows for the evaluation of 3D specimens with varying types of light exposure to simulate different environments. The chamber can be used to evaluate materials such as:

  • Films
  • Interior and exterior automotive components
  • Paints and coatings
  • Roofing materials
  • Plastic materials
  • Coated materials
  • Textiles
  • Laminates

Smithers Rapra’s independent, third party lab offers Xenon Arc testing to industry-specific standards including ASTM G155 and G151 as well as various other ASTM, ISO, automotive OE standards and other custom test protocols.

In addition to the Xenon Arc test chamber, the lab will bring online additional equipment which will expand their current offerings in flammability testing. Following the launch in Q2 2016, the lab will offer services that include horizontal and vertical burn testing as well as ASTM and ISO standard tests.

Laboratory Supervisor, Jeff Marek explains, “Expanding our flammability testing capabilities will give our clients access to this type of testing without having to take on the inherent hazards of testing in their own lab.”
