Tariffs apply to a wide range of printed packaging including the raw materials including plastics, paper, paperboard, inks and coatings. They also apply to consumer-packaged goods, raw materials, components, sub-assemblies and industrial products where any change in demand will directly impact associated packaging.

The overall picture from a macro perspective suggests that the impact of US tariffs on the packaging sector will be comparatively minor in all but the most pessimistic forecast. Even then, the impact will be limited to those products being imported in large numbers from countries where tariffs are high.

However, it should be noted that there will be effects on a smaller scale that could disproportionately impact some businesses that have particular exposure to tariffs. This could include a US business that manufactures locally in the US and has a large export business in China or another country where reciprocal tariffs are high. In this case the impact of tariffs could be severe and potentially business critical, particularly if that business faces competition from suppliers with manufacturing outside the US.

This is similar to the effect seen with Chinese manufacturers of products such as clothing, where exports to the US have stalled.
