Government Regulatory Testing
Smithers Rapra has been involved in tire testing since 1925 yet our knowledge extends to the most current North American, European, and other international industry standards and protocols.
Smithers laboratories conduct tests for many international government standards for tires, including: FMVSS, CMVSS, ASTM, SAE and NOM. In addition, we also perform a number of custom OEM specified protocols and validation requirements.
All Smithers laboratories are ISO 17025 accredited and certified to perform a number of test evaluations. Some examples include:
These tests are used to evaluate a number of different types of vehicles including:
- Passenger cars
- And other low speed vehicles
North American requirements according to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
FMVSS No. 139 covers pneumatic radial tires for light vehicles other than motorcycles and low speed vehicles (GVWR less than or equal to 10,000 lbs). The standard specifies tire dimensions used on passenger cars and establishes minimum requirements for sidewall labeling, tire strength, resistance to bead unseating, endurance, and high-speed performance.
FMVSS No. 119 establishes similar requirements for multipurpose passenger vehicle, truck, bus, trailer, and motor cycle tires. All of the requirements of these standards can be performed at Smithers Rapra.
