Small Batch Rubber Mixing

Our small batch rubber mixing capabilities provide clients with the flexibility to develop several compound formulations for benchmarking or evaluation purposes.

Depending on internal capabilities, small mixing studies can become time consuming, expensive, and difficult to conduct. When testing various rubber compound formulations, it's important to not only account for adequate mixing capabilities but also the right amount needed for material testing.

With several mixing options available, Smithers Rapra can assist clients with mixing studies covering a variety of applications.

Banbury Mixer (1.5L Capacity)

  • High Volume Applications
  • Easy to mix stocks
  • Low viscosity stocks
  • Sticky materials
  • High viscosity with multiple step mixing
  • Final step mix on high viscosity stocks

Kneader Mixer with Intermeshing Rotors (1L Capacity)

  • High viscosity stocks
  • Specialty rubber goods (Low Temp Mixing)
  • Reactive mixing (Silica Treads)
  • Compounds with hard-to-disperse fillers
  • Single step mixing
  • Extreme high quality applications

The intermeshing mixer delivers improved distributive, dispersive, and reactive mixing and can achieve high quality results. Intermesh rotors offer more surface area and contact points inside the mixing chamber, both against the walls of the chamber and between the rotor blades. This allows for increased shear and better temperature control than could be achieved in a tangential mixer. Using an intermesh mixer also improves the effectiveness of the hydrophobation chemical reaction of the organosilane with the silica, an important benefit considering the fact that silica is difficult to disperse in highly loaded compounds.
